Snippets August 2022 Special Director's MessageAs India and the Indian diaspora all over the world celebrate 75 years of our independence, wishing our alumni and their families a very happy Independence Day. This special edition of Snippets is devoted to our esteemed donors of 2021-22 to convey our gratitude for their generous donations to promote excellence at IIT Roorkee. I am delighted to share that in recent years IIT Roorkee is witnessing a significant growth in the giving back culture among its alumni. In fact, the year 2021-22 has set a new record, by a wide margin, in donations received from alumni. Thus, the amount received is more than double of the previous best year in this regard. This special edition of Snippets lists the contributions of our alumni and also celebrates IIT Roorkee’s growing connect with its esteemed alumni. With the pandemic receding, we look forward to hosting alumni reunions in the campus. I am sure the reunions will provide the right platform to carry forward this momentum in the giving back culture at IIT Roorkee so that the pressing infrastructure and several other needs of IIT Roorkee can be met in the same manner as they are met in our sister institutions in India and the top academic institutions globally. Esteemed Donors of 2021-22 Mr. Ashok Soota pledges a donation of Rs 20 croreShri Ashok Soota (1964- B.E.- Electrical Engineering) has donated for a Chair Professorship, three Faculty Fellowships, creation of a new molecular medicine facility lab and funding of research projects. Out of the pledged amount of Rs. 20 crores, IIT Roorkee has received Rs. 6 crores in 2021-22. Mr. Mohinder Nayyar and Dr. Sushil Sharma jointly pledge a donation of USD 4 lakhMr. Mohinder Nayyar (1966- B.E.- Mechanical Engineering) and Dr. Sushil Sharma (1969- B.E.- Mechanical Engineering) have jointly pledged USD 4 lakhs for a virtual Energy Conclave for industry-oriented research in the field of energy. Out of the pledged amount, Mr. Mohinder Nayyar has donated USD 1.5 lakh and Dr. Sushil Sharma has donated USD 1 lakh in 2021-22. Dr. Surendra K Goel and Mrs. Kusum Goel pledge a donation of Rs. 2 croreDr. Surendra K Goel (1958-B.E.- Civil Engineering) and Mrs. Kusum Goel have pledged a donation of Rs. 2 crore for meeting the full tuition fee expenses of four needy undergraduate students pursuing engineering education. Out of the pledged amount, Rs 70.34 lakhs was received in 2021-22. Family of Late Prof. A.S. Arya donated Rs 74.27 lakhsFamily of Late Prof. A.S. Arya donated the balance amount of Rs 74.27 lakhs to complete their donation of Rs 1.5 crores for the AS Arya Institute Chair Professorship which was instituted in 2020-21 in honour of IITR alumnus and doyen of Earthquake Engineering Late Prof Anand Swarup Arya (1954-M.E.- Structural Engineering). Mr. Mohinder Nayyar donated USD 50,000Mr. Mohinder Nayyar (1966- B.E.- Mechanical Engineering) had donated USD 50,000 in 2020-21 out of the pledged amount of USD one lakh, for the Prabha Nayyar award in honour of his late wife, for Excellence in Time Management. The remaining donation of USD 50,000 for the corpus was received in 2021-22. Dr. Purnima M Parida and Prof. M. Parida donated Rs 28 lakhsDr. Purnima M Parida (2006- Ph.D.-Transportation Planning) and Prof. M. Parida (1995 - Ph.D. - Civil Engineering) donated Rs. 1 crore in 2020-21 out of the pledged amount of Rs. 1.5 crore for the Ravi Mohan Mangal Institute Chair Professorship. The donation of Rs 28 lakhs was received for the corpus in 2021-22. Mr. A.K. Goel pledges a donation of Rs. 35 lakhsMr. Ashwani Kumar Goel (1970- B.E.- Civil Engineering) has pledged Rs. 35 lakhs to establish an annual Green Energy prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a Gold Medal for students. Out of the pledged amount, Rs. 10 lakhs was received in 2021-22. IIT Roorkee alumni donated Rs 10.78 lakhsA group of alumni of 1989 batch (ENCORE) carried out a campaign among IITR alumni for a Covid Relief Fund for IITR Students. They contributed Rs. 10.78 lakhs in 2021-22. Mr. Shyam S. Biyani donated Rs 10 lakhsMr. Shyam S. Biyani (1976- P.G.D.- Pulp & Paper Engineering) established two cash awards for the students in Saharanpur campus who work in Polymer or Packaging Technology. The donation received in 2021-22 is Rs 10 lakhs. Mr. Raj Krishna donated Rs 8 lakhsMr. Raj Krishna, S/o Late Prof. Bal Krishna who served the Mathematics department of University of Roorkee, established Prof. Bal Krishna award of Rs 1 lakh in the memory of his father. The award will be given annually, for the next ten years, to the best faculty of Mathematics department of IIT Roorkee. The donation received in 2021-22 is Rs 8 lakhs. Mr. Sanjeev Mittal, Ms. Seema Garg and Mr. Rajeev Krishna donated Rs 7.5 lakhsMr. Sanjeev Mittal (1984- B.E.- Electronics and Communications Engineering) and his siblings namely Ms. Seema Garg (1988-B.E. Computer Science and Engineering) and Mr. Rajeev Krishna (1989- B.E.- Electronics and Communication Engineering) donated Rs 7.5 lakhs in 2021-22 to establish a student leadership award of Rs.30,000/- in the name of their father Shri Hari Krishna Mittal, also an alumnus of IIT Roorkee, for enhancing entrepreneurship culture among the students. Smt. Prerna Gupta donated Rs 5 lakhsSmt. Prerna Gupta established an award in the memory of her late husband Prof. V.K. Gupta, a former faculty in the Department of Chemistry. It will be given to the research scholar whose paper is published in the journal with the highest impact journal from among the journals in which papers are published from the Department of Chemistry of IIT Roorkee. The donation received in 2021-22 was Rs 5 lakhs. MECH 76 Alumni Award Mechanical Engineering Alumni of 1976 batch donated Rs 5 lakhsThe alumni of 1976 batch, Mechanical Engineering, established two awards of Rs 10,000 each to be given annually to the two students with the highest CGPA up to the 4th and 6th semesters respectively, in Mechanical Engineering Department. The donation received in 2021-22 was Rs 5 lakhs. Mr. Rakesh Thapar donated Rs 4 lakhMr. Rakesh Thapar (1979 - B.E. - Electrical) has donated for an annual lecture series in the Department of Hydro and Renewable Energy, for a period of ten years, in the name of his father Prof. O.D. Thapar. The donation received in 2021-22 was Rs 4 lakhs. Prof. Dr. N.K. Garg donated Rs 3.4 lakhsProf. Dr. N.K. Garg (1970- B.Arch.) had pledged an amount of Rs. 10 lakhs in 2019-20 for the Chandravati Gold Medal in the name of his mother. The Gold Medal is awarded annually to the topper of B. Arch. The donation received in 2021-22 was Rs. 3.4 lakhs. Mr. Abhas Kumar donated Rs 3.3 lakhsMr. Abhas Kumar (1984 - B.E. - Mechanical Engineering) has established a Gold Medal in the name of his father S K Kumar for the M.Tech. student with the highest CGPA, for a period of ten years in the Department of Water Resources and Development and Management. The donation received in 2021-22 was Rs 3.3 lakhs.. Prof. Kumkum Garg donated Rs 3.3 lakhsProf. Kumkum Garg (1971- B.E.- Electronics and Communications Engineering) established a Gold Medal in her name in the Centre for AI and Data Science for the student with the highest CGPA in the newly started M.Tech. programs, for a period of ten years. The donation received in 2021-22 was Rs 3.3 lakhs. Mr. Kapil Garg donated Rs 3.3 lakhsMr. Kapil Garg (1988- B.E.- Chemical Engineering) established a Gold Medal in his name to be awarded to the topper of B.Tech. Chemical Engineering, for a period of ten years. Donation received in the 2021-22 financial year was Rs 3.3 lakhs. Mr. Lakshmi Sampath, his wife Mrs. Shree Ayenger and Mr. Prabhat Sinha pledge a donation of USD 10,000Mr. Lakshmi N. Sampath (1961- B.E.- Electrical Engineering), his wife Mrs. Shree Ayenger and Mr. Prabhat Sinha who had served University of Roorkee for three years as a Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering, have jointly initiated Sampath Sinha scholarships to provide financial support to two disadvantaged undergraduate students from engineering branches. The intent is to award at least one scholarship to a female student. If a female student does not meet the criteria then both the scholarships shall be awarded to male students. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds received in 2021-2022 Media.Net Software Services (India) & Net Partner Technology Services Pvt. Ltd. donated Rs 42.99 lakhs and Rs 6.44 lakhs respectivelyThis donation is to provide financial support to meritorious students from low-income groups who are pursuing B. Tech. Program in Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering or BS-MS (Mathematics and Computing) or Integrated M.Sc. (Applied Mathematics). Rs 38.83 lakhs donated to Anushruti Academy for the DeafThis is the overall miscellaneous small donations received for Anushruti Academy for the Deaf from various alumni, IIT Roorkee staff and corporates. SEWA-THDC has pledged Rs 25.17 lakhsSEWA-THDC, a society sponsored by THDC India Ltd. pledged Rs. 25.17 lakhs and donated Rs 15.00 lakhs in 2021-22 for infrastructure development in Anushruti Academy for the Deaf (AAD). Health Asyst Pvt. Ltd. has donated Rs 11.3 lakhsHealth Asyst Pvt. Ltd. has donated Rs 11.3 lakhs for lab upgradation in the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department. Kunal Conchem Pvt Ltd donated Rs 5 lakhsEvery year the best player in football and the best player in cricket will receive a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each from this donation. |
